Finding herself in front of her monitor array, Barbara Gordon sat with her chin in the palm of her hand. Thinking. Fighting off sleepiness, Barbara's tired eyes glazed over the headlines in front of her.
So much had been happening.
Too much had been going on.
The attack on Black Canary had left her filled with nightmares. Too many nightmares. Every time she closed her eyes she was met with her operatives, her friends, laying in a pool of their crimson juices trickling down their faces. Their dark, soulless eyes staring at her. Screaming at her.
'Why didn't you DO anything, Oracle? Why couldn't you save us?'
Barbara shuddered at the thought and took another sip of her coffee.
A caffeinated induced state was pretty much what she was running on.
She didn't want to sleep.
She couldn't.
And she didn't want to have those nightmares anymore. And it seemed that not sleeping was a sure fire-way to stop seeing those images.
Though, she knew she would secombe sooner or later. Hopefully a LOT later than sooner, for her sake.
She secretly had to wonder if Dinah, Charlie or Zinda happened to notice the state she was in. A few times Zinda had come by to ask if she was okay or if she needed anything, but each time, she was short and rather agitated with her responses.
She didn't mean to be.
She didn't mean to push her away.
Barbara sighed and rubbed her cheek, trying to get her eyes to focus. Hearing a blip from her monitor, she activated her com-piece, her eyes being drawn to the alert of whom was tapping on her proverbial digital door.
At least the voice synthesizer would mask her tiredness.
"What can I do you for?"

"Hello again Oracle... I've been to Arkham."
I recall the events of two weeks past.
"I spent much of my time since our last meeting trying to faces to suspicions about who is a part of the conspiracy I have been sensing here. Going to Arkham Asylum put me on the trail though it left me with more questions than answers."
Arkham felt the best place to start though as I thought it was only the beginning.
"The streets of Gotham reveal a new drug is growing in popularity at an alarming rate. There have been deaths namely among the people living in the Wash, the Narrows, and other rundown areas."
I send pictures of the dealers, the buyers, the customers, and some covered up bodies that I found after I learned their ultimate fate. The looks on their faces all indicate that they were either afraid or amused.
"Joker and Scarecrow rank as the most probable candidates."
Of course the Arkham guards were my welcoming committee.
"The guards' agility and stamina resulted from Mad Hatter's head bands."
I stealthy made my way towards a lone guard and attempt to subdue him by asphyxiation and he struggles against my grip. His extertions slow until finally stopping. He's still breathing... still alive... I remove the control band and turn to leave only to find my attack on their comrade didn't get pass them.
"Some look ready for a mass breakout. Others look like they are having their smokes interrupted. All however are alert to the fact that one of their buddies isn't standing anymore."
It was not a fight I had come expecting, but then I'm no Batman.
"Knockouts only made more come after me. I had to elude them and reach Tetch."
The more cells I pass, the more I see that the inmates are in the appearance of being asleep which contradicts the breakout level readiness of the guards.
"Tetch was in the main security room directing the guards. It didn't take much persuasion for him to call off his 'attack' guards. The man was clearly not even all there either."
I took him back to his cell which was in the same area of Arkham as many other maximum security 'residents'.
"As we got into that area, I saw several of your more colorful villains were where they should be if they were still in Arkham, but not everyone was 'home'. Both literally and psychologically..."
The most notable absence was Jonathan Crane.
"... the latter being more typical of Scarecrow."

By the sound of his voice, Barbara arched an eyebrow, listening to his claims. Leave it to Question to bring her an array of tangled messages in between recanting events.
It amused her if anything. And it really allowed her to keep herself on her toes. "It's..... funny you make mention of Arkham..."
Her fingers slid over one of her screens, allowing her middle finger and thumb expand out her touch screen to get a better resolution of the information at hand. "Arkham is one of those places that I like to generally keep tabs on. Normally I would have noticed patterns pop up but my mind... it..."
She rubbed her temples, trying to think of a good way to explain things without having to dump too much. "I..I've been in such a fog lately. I can't explain it."
It was the lack of sleep.
And....
Nightmares.
She knew it was. But she wasn't going to admit it.
Maybe something else. Something else she couldn't explain. Her temper seemed to be getting lit a lot faster and burning hotter than normal over the past few days.
"I've been taking note to some of the... internal files of some of the staff. Their... notes... have either just stopped after a certain date or... have been nothing but.. nonsense. Totally breaking away from their structured character archetypes."
As the flood of files and images came in, she furrowed her brow. The news and police and morgue numbers had been influxing a lot more over the past few weeks. And more than the Gotham average.
She furrowed her brow. Her voice raised from behind her voice synthesizer. Nothing would translate. "YOU went into Arkham on your OWN? Without BACKUP??!"
She felt her blood start to boil and beats of sweat start to form along her brow.
Someone else she could potentially lose.
She couldn't let that happen.
"Question... LOOK. You've been REALLY great but I don't want--"
She was cut off.
Did he just say...
"Scarecrow....?"
She had to wonder if Charlie's encounter some nights ago encountered might have had anything to do with anything. She did keep waking up from nightmares.
Dinah too.
Zinda.
And.... herself.
Her eyes went wide, thinking about it. Realization starting to flood her mind.
Could it possibly be?
But HOW?
None of this made any sense.
This was too much all at once.
She reached over and grabbed her mug and took a sip of her coffee. Freshly brewed coffee. At least that would help.
"We need to find him..."

Oracle understands the importance of stopping this before it spreads too far though even I have to wonder if its already too late. Of course i shouldn't think like that, but having been to Arkham and seen some firsthand results of what appears to be Scarecrow's handiwork. I just can't twiddle my thumbs and wait for his next move.
"In Hub City, I usually faced many dangers alone. I admit here in Gotham I wouldn't have had to do that, but old habits are persistent."
I mentally concede in hindsight that it was a reckless decision considering the opposition's resistance to my presence.
"Not much of an excuse given who typically is to be found locked away in Arkham. Still finding this out with what I had seen on the streets was necessary."
The gravity of this is that Scarecrow appears to be testing something on everyone. Making no discrimination of what his 'subjects' are in relation to him.
"Yes... this likely being him means we do need to find him and put a stop to this before it does more damage... especially to the other costumes including your 'Birds'."
I don't know how far this has spread outside the rundown districts of Gotham, but anything is possible since I know little about the mechanics of how this gas is getting around.
"I'm not much of a scientist... but someone I think should attend to Arkham in an official capacity. As for myself, I think I should be medically tested and maybe the others too."
Only offering suggestions at most.
"Just ideas."
Through the blinds and across the street for a moment I thought I saw someone dressed like a religious figure. Strikingly similar to the late Jeremiah Hatch. Still given what's happened in the past few months its hard not to see why I still think about the deplorable man.
"Still more questions to answer here."

Her eyes continued to scan over the documents that Question had sent her.
Everything really was linking up quite nicely. She.... couldn't believe it.
"I actually already had Misfit's blood tested not too long ago in the event something was in her system the night she had that episode in the alley. Though, from the intel that Canary had brought back.. it doesn't seem like Scarecrow would have even been in the immediate area at the time. Though... with the symptoms that she exhibited, they're... almost the same.. At least to what Scarecrow's toxins are concerned.
"The nightmares. The restlessness.. boughts of extreme fear?"
She pondered the thought even more so. "I... wouldn't be surprised if we've all got something... I've been noticing I've been... rather... 'edgy' myself for some unexplained reason."
She really didn't want to go into extreme details of the flashes she was going through, though. She.. just couldn't.
"Blood tests would be a start... I'll run a few. I'd be happy to draw your blood if you want to swing by... Do some comparisons... it might be a smart idea..."

"Guess I'll be seeing you at the Clocktower sooner or later."
Most of the symptoms could be overlooked because of the strain that's weighing on all of us, but even so something about all this seems too scientific to be natural. Scarecrow has taken many to brink of madness before and this appears no different. We're all ripe for the gas to do numbers on us. Recent history makes us more vulnerable than usual.
"If you've found Green Arrow than you better check on his recent quarries in the event that it was transmitted to him by them. The mechanics of this thing need to be sorted out. Also I'm sure you'll let your operatives know of these developments."
Deny the battle of mind through will or at least that's something Sensei would say right about now.
"I think I'll also have you test my aerosol supplies. There's just too many vectors for transmission so they should all be checked. "
Apophenia strikes again... it was hard to forget who said that to me for the first time... even harder to forget how close we almost came to kissing all those years ago.
"Also any word on Huntress?"

"It's... funny you mention Green Arrow..." she started, her fingers going forth to organize the data that Question had recently provided her with. "He actually surfaced. Canary had a bad run in with some punks and Arrow happened to be there to assist. I'm honestly glad he was there... things weren't going so hot..."
Maybe just leaving the explanation of the encounter off at that end point was good enough.
"If you needed, I have a full operational sub-lab here... your equipment can be tested just as easily, right along with your blood samples. If... you didn't have the means of a unit of testing, that is."
So much information....
Barbara's mind was whirling. She was going to need some added help to track down Scarecrow's whereabouts. And after the last encounter with Dinah? She couldn't risk a solo mission.
"Huntress is on a bit of an undercover mission for me right now. Dealing with a lead from a reoccurring name that seems to pop up in my files. She's been in contact, though."
Huntress.... would be a valuable asset to this particular mission, however.. she knew she couldn't call upon her. Her task was too heavy. She couldn't risk any slip-ups there either.
She had to wonder if Arrow might be up for a bit of hide and seek. Seemed to her like a playable team would be much better in this situation. At least that way the would be able to draw their line in the sand and take their marks.
Yes.
She reached over to connect another channel, her synthesized voice buzzing. "Arrow...? You got a minute?" She knew he would hear. Unless.... he really wasn't as thrilled about her little gift package she presented with him a few days prior.
She hoped he answered...

Oliver Queen was dead. Then, in the eyes of the superhero world, he got better.
After Oracle had given him a living quarters (as well as a few brand new fancy gadgets, including a new cellphone), he had to find a way to re-introduce himself into the world of the living again.
When Oracle presented him with the option of living in the Clocktower, she offered to co-bunk with Dinah. In his heart, he wanted to, his last memories of the night being laying in her bed, her half-asleep due to her heavy pain killers, and falling asleep cuddled up to him. She said she loved him, but a part of him questioned if it was Dinah Lance who said it, or the medication. He didn't want to either take the risk to his still fully connected jaw and stay with her, or betray what little trust she had in him left and take advantage of her.
No. He was done hurting her.
Suited up in his new and improved Green Arrow costume, Oliver began pacing back and forth on his cellphone, twirling an arrow between his fingers. Already, he had made three calls. One to his son, Connor, who he only got the voicemail of. Another to his ward, Roy, who spent two solid minutes calling him every profane name in a dirty jokebook before hanging up on him. Finally, he called his unofficial daughter, Mia.
Mia was his sidekick, currently going by the name "Speedy". She was a soldier of fortune, who actually willingly accepted the role of Speedy when push came to shove. He had her respect, and she had his. But that didn't make the call any easier.
"No, Mia. I didn't WANT to do this. I HAD to do this. There is a difference........Of course I didn't enjoy 'making you cry'..........Oh, you think I didn't want to be at Lian's funeral?.......Me? Selfish?.......I loved that kid to death......No, Im NOT making a pun! Look, Mia....Mia?....Mia, can you stop screaming at me for a second so I can explain som----Come on, Mia, you don't mean that.........you....you really think that..........Yeah, Im sure other people wish I really did die too.......Yeah....Great.....Enjoy your life, then."
Make that, 'had' her respect.
Gritting his teeth, Oliver threw the brand new phone at the wall as hard as he could, immediatly shattering it. As soon as he did, he winced in annoyance before gathering the pieces and looked down at it.
Poor little phone.
It wasn't it's fault for Oliver's stupid actions.
Seemed to be going around quite alot. Bad news comes along, and things suffer that didn't do a single thing wrong.
After an all to familiar buzz, Oliver pressed the button on his brand new headset, taking a deep breath to try and get back to a calm state of mind.
"Arrow....Yeah, I'll be right there."
Walking out of his quarters and into the monitor room, he was a little caught off guard to see the Question there. The two had rarely worked together, and frankly, he didn't really know too much about it, but Oracle was clearly trusting enough to let him into the inner hub of the heroes world, so that was enough for him.
"Question."
It was a quick and simple greeting as Oliver laid out the pieces of his phone on her desk, setting it aside for it's lack of overall importance.
"I think I need another one of these. Some deranged madman decided to break it."

It had been awhile since I had seen Green Arrow though it was validating to see the 'Birds' had drawn him back into the fold. Especially with Scarecrow adding to Gotham's troubles anew. Again there was much more a primal cause likely to Arrow's return to the fold namely his Pretty Bird who is nowhere in sight at the moment, but likely on the archer's mind. Perhaps more than just his mind though that's entirely not my business.
"Green Arrow... knew you were still alive... sorry about Star City... certain others are happy to have you back... contrary to their initial reactions... need all the help they can get around here."
I understood what Oracle had told me about Huntress and despite having not agreed with how Huntress took to resolving how to deal with how her past had come back to rankle her further. Question couldn't really offer up stories in his own history to assuage her from her decision and besides it wouldn't have worked either.
Once Huntress makes her decision, she is set upon seeing things through, but he couldn't speak entirely to the heroine she had become. Going out into the world dressed like this usually meant hard decisions and consequences to match those decisions.
"So I think you better tell mre more about your run-in with KGBeast because I suspect it ties into what I have been learning about Scarecrow."
I imagine mentioning this encounter would hopefully focus his thoughts to the encounter because I need a comparison to my own encounter with the Arkham guards. It would also have to have examples of how the gas affects individual behavior. Of course I need to speak to the others, but for now I would focus on Green Arrow.

Barbara had already prepared a small stainless steel try with a batch of syringes and phials by the time the two had arrived. She thought about waking Dinah to become part of her mini-experiment, but she thought against it. Dinah was in pretty bad shape at the moment and she really needed to be left alone to rest as long as she could. Though, she had a feeling once the three of them started discussing matters that she was going to wake up. Dinah always had impeccable timing for that sort of thing.
"Good... now that the two of you are here... you can roll up your sleeves while I draw some blood.
"I need to do a blood tox, along with any other test that will give me the results I'm looking for." She knew Ollie was going to be more in the dark than she and Question were.
Time to fill him in.
She motioned to the two of them to get to cooperating with giving her their arms to draw their blood.
"Question presented me with some information that seems to be running in consistent loops with some back research that I've been doing.
"I'm not sure if you've been aware, but the state of Arkham's being has been tanking more than the average. My system caught inconsistencies within the staffs notes over a period of weeks now... something I thought might be of later interest. Something I thought I should keep my eyes on. Something that really had no logical explanation or good reasoning to the decline. However, it was nothing too solid. Not until now.
"The cell of Johnathan Crane was found to be empty...."
The agitated Barbara was starting to surface again. "THANKS to SOMEONE who couldn't have waited TWO seconds for BACKUP and didn't bother to call until AFTER the fact." She motioned to Question, grumbling under her breath.
Deep down she didn't mean what she just said.
She seemed to be snapping quicker than anything with anything that even mildly annoyed her.
Yeah. That was totally not her normal.
At least she knew... or possibly knew the cause of it. But.. she wasn't sure HOW. Not yet.
"Scarecrow." Barbara clarified.
"He's... too dangerous and I'm pretty sure he's.... affecting us. YOU.... Dinah, myself-- Mister Let's-Go-Get-Myself-Killed-By-Sneaking-Into-Arkham-And-Not-Telling-Anyone-Where-I-Am--" She shot Question a glare. She felt the sudden need to take out one of her escrimas and smack him in the back of the knee. Her fingers hovered over their concealed holding spot under her chair.
She was still mad.
"--multiple others across the city."
She reached over and pulled up a profile of the GCPD. "Crime rates have sky rocketed-- Incidents with people under the influence of hallucinogens and other 'mind altering substances' have been reported everywhere..."
She pulled up another. Gotham General Hospital. "Psych consults are WAY more than the average. And I have a feeling that the body count in the city morgue can help close this loop and make it go full circle once more."
She tilted her head as she watched for their reactions, suddenly realizing Arrow's phone was in pieces in front of her. Didn't she just give that to him....?
Annoyance gauge was starting to tally like a gamer's online kill count.
"Deranged madman..." She twitched.

Dinah's sleep was interrupted by the sounds of voices from down the hall. Normally she would be more annoyed but they had awakened her from what was quickly turning into a nightmare. She laid there and tried to listen to the conversation without having to move much but it was proving to be useless, and maybe if she played nice Barbara would give her some more "happy" pills so she could go back to sleep.
Dinah gently sat up holding on to her ribs as she did. Broken ribs was the worst injury Dinah had dealt with in her long list of things she has broken, the ribs just seemed to hurt no matter what you did and the littlest movement set it off. She grumbled slightly to herself as she stood up. it was her own damn fault that she felt this horribly.
As she made her way to the door she checked herself in the mirror, trying to fix her hair a little bit. Maybe part of her was happy to hear Ollie's voice and she always wanted to look good for him but the underlying pain and anger he caused her soon surfaced again and she stopped fussing with her hair and made her way down the hall.
"what are you three discussing at this ungodly hour?"

"I already gave my explanation for why I went to Arkham alone. I admit I could have gone with someone, but as I also stated previously usually I am alone in Hub City. It didn't look like you were deploying anyone to look into it so I just went. Wrong or not... we have bigger problems than me going off without backup... if it makes you feel better than hit me like you probably hit him."
Inclination towards violence was something he had seen in the people in the streets where the drug was in mass circulation and he had also seen the violence in the guards that went after him in Arkham.
"Has anyone else been injured or worse by acting alone recently?"
Perhaps that wasn't the best thing to blot out while looking at Black Canary.
"I realize I can't take the blurt back...but back to the nightmare handed to us by Scarecrow... I mean we have to deal with what's doing to us before we deal with him... otherwise we'll just get gassed again or worse."

Once his blood sample was taken, Ollie slipped his guard-sleevs back up his arm, looking down at his fist as he was quickly re-adjusting to his glove. The needle work was nothing new to him. Frankly, he could care less about drawing blood. Not too long ago, he practically forced a doctor to drain him dry after his son, Conner, got in a scuffle with Onomatopeia and needed a transfusion. Hell, barely able to stand, Ollie kept an arrow drained on 'O' for nearly an hour. Physical pain, irritation, and exhaustion were nothing new to him.
However, with arms crossed and foot tapping, Oliver was quickly beginning to get bored with the rundown of information. Giving him the facts was one thing, but what was up with the commentary? The sudden cracks between Oracle and Question. What were they? Married?
As soon as the subject of Arkham Asylum and the inconsistancies of backround records were coming up, Ollie's liberal mindset couldn't help but make an apperance.
"What do you expect? Most prisons are the same; especially those for the metahuman-criminally insane. 'These people did bad. Let's lock them up inside of a small room and hope they get better based on ntohing but good intentions'. Facist cops..."
Had Oliver had any idea that Barbara's father was a Cop, he most certainly would have kept that last part to himself. However, his attention quickly turned to the Question.
"And YOU. What could have possibly have made up connect the dots between an all out nightmare induced plague hitting the city, Scarecrow, and somehow having it mix and mesh with that c-lister, KGBeast. Am I to assume that this has something to do with the great, grand conspiracy web that you still think is weaving?"
Oliver had to catch his breath and shake his head. He was still testy. It had been a long night, and things had yet to really catch up with him just yet. He was still tredding on eggshells, and sometimes, he simply had to unload a little.
"...Alright, KGBeast. It was simple enough. He was at the Gotham docks, unloading something from a recently docked boat. Could have been guns. Could have been drugs. I didn't personally stay long enough to check. I quickly took out his stooges, then gave the Beast himself a ker-whopping. When I heard police sirens, I gathered by arrows, left KGBeast behind, and took off. I guess I left a single arrow behind....but still, Im not quite sure how that could have somehow infected me. Unless.....unless his shipment had something to do with the distribution of Scarecrow's gas. Maybe the Beast was somehow in on it too."
Ollie looked back as he watched Dinah walk in. Seeing her clutch her ribs, he quickly rushed over to her and held her close, trying to give her a little support.
"Hey, Pretty Bird. Feeling any better?"

"At this point its just a theory that Scarecrow could be using individuals like KGBeast to 'infect' others like you Arrow. Similarly street thugs could likewise 'infected' your Pretty Bird. One way or another we have all likely been exposed to the gas."
I didn't think this development had any ties to the conspiracy web as the archer calls it.
"It is not so much a matter of how did happen, but how do we stop it before it turns us on each other and turns the city on itself. I mean listen to yourself... you chewed me and Oracle only to regain composure when Canary appears visibly worse for wear."
It is true he appears less aggressive and more fearful for her condition.
"Aberrations in both ourselves and at Arkham point to something being afoot. So tell me who else has had hallucinations? nightmares? inexplicable outbursts? things that you can't control period?"
If I hadn't found some sliver of restraint I would have grabbed him by the collar and yelled don't you see what's happening to us right now. Instead I exhale and retreat to the bathroom to remove my 'face'. For once in a long time I feel suffocated by this thing. Until that solo gamble into Arkham, I felt at ease with my 'face' now I just want out of it.

"No....." Barbara shook her head, starting on what would be the start to a very long angry rant. Her internal urges mixing with her own personal temperament laced with fear and this unspeakable rage trying to lash out for some kind of release. "THIS isn't exactly YOUR city, Question. We don't do 'solo' here! If you haven't noticed LOOK what happened to BATMAN--"
Her eyes went wide after hearing the result of her own outburst and quickly covered her mouth as her eyes started to well up.
The deepened fear coming to light.
Out in the open.
Her hands were shaking at the thought as she quickly turned away from the others. She couldn't let herself be seen in such a state. It wasn't right.
She inhaled sharply, falling silent. She was suddenly met with Dinah's familiar voice and she turned to her, trying to keep herself in line. Maybe with Dinah around... she'd have better composure. "It's.. good to see you up and about... Are... are you okay?"
She attempted to play catch up with Dinah. Trying to speak slowly and carefully, while trying to keep her own self together. "....and like I said before... We can't afford to have whatever THIS is continuing to infect us like it is. We need to put a stop to this. This... is too dangerous. We're losing control... slowly and surely.
"Do.. you think you can help me? I'd like to take some of your blood to use it for comparison. Same with Zinda and Charlie... wherever they are.."
Barbara listened to the conversation that waged on between Question and Ollie. She had already figured that she had fallen victim to all of the initial symptoms that Question had spoken of. She didn't want to admit it, but she knew there was no use hiding it. "Hallucinations, sudden and uncontrollable boughts of rage.... fearful tendencies...nightmares." She grumbled, thinking about the reoccurring ones plaguing her. "It's unnerving..."
