As James Gordon lay in bed, trying to sleep, all he saw when he closed his eyes were the faces of the citizens he had failed to protect. He saw all of the officers under his command who had fallen in the line of duty. He saw his only daughter being shot right in front of him and the lifeless body of his wife. He saw his friend and colleague, Harvey Dent. He saw the scene from earlier that night: walking into the 24-hour convenience store at the corner of Miller St. and Snyder Blvd. and finding Gilda Dent, Harvey's former wife, among the casualties.
The commissioner opened his eyes and sat up, legs over the side of the bed. The floor was cold beneath his feet. He put on his slippers and robe, grabbed his pipe and matches, and stepped out onto the patio. Even after all these years, he still couldn't bring himself to smoke in the house. Sarah had never allowed it. He struck a match and lit his pipe.
Gordon could remember going to dinner at the Dent's regularly with his first wife, Barbara. They had even spent a few holidays together, mustering as much cheer as they could in a city like Gotham. He had lost touch with Gilda after Harvey's accident. He imagined it was difficult socializing with the man whose job it was to send her husband to prison, but knew that Barbara would still pay their old friend a visit every now and again. Once the divorce went through he had no idea what had ever become of Gilda. Now he knew; she was another person he had sworn to protect but could not, just like her husband.
"Harvey..."
In moments Gordon was out the door and on his way to Arkham Asylum to deliver the news to Harvey Dent that his wife had been murdered. His stomach turned and a chill went up his spine at the thought that Two-Face might be the man he spoke with.

Harleen Quinzel lay upside down in her Arkham cell watching as the orderlies rushed by. The sounds of the cold Asylum only seemed to bounce off the walls like some kind of acoustic masterpiece. It was weird being back on the inside. Anytime she was in here, it was ALWAYS strange.
She could remember the days when she was the one in the lab coat, conducting patient interviews and determining their mental states. She was the one with the pen and clipboard in hand, making those notes that determined if patients were to stay behind the padded walls for life, or... be left for society to deal with.
Biting her lip, she twirled right side up, slumping down to the floor, watching the other patients in their cells. At least... the ones she COULD see anyway.
The only one she could really see from her angle was Harvey Dent. She scooted to the edge of her cell and waved frantically to him, giving him a warm smile.
Did he see her??!
Though, Dent wasn't much of a conversationalist.... Unlike Pamela.
She sighed heavily as tears started welling into her eyes. She missed Ivy, immensely. This had been the longest time she had been apart from her best friend and it was driving her insane.
If she had only listened to Ivy and dropped what she was doing on their last heist, she wouldn't be in this mess right now. It was sheer dumb luck that she got caught. Normally? She was a lot more careful than that.
As the days turned into weeks, all she could do is sit tight. She had a feeling that Ivy was going to help bust her out so they could go back to living the glam-and green life again.
Footsteps.
Probably another orderly. It was too early for dinner.
She raised an eyebrow as she noticed a familiar figure walk past her.
She... was honestly shocked.
"Commissioner.. Gordon?" she whispered in amazement.
She stood slowly and watched silently.
Oh how she loved juicy gossip!

In addition to all of the other amenities Arkham Asylum was without, it lacked a visitors room. The inmates here didn't see many. As a result, Harvey Dent found himself handcuffed to a chair in the outer office of Professor Hugo Strange. There were armed guards on either side of him and an orderly as well.
Fifteen minutes ago he was extracted from his cell, well past lights out, when Strange always left for the evening. Whoever it was that wanted to see Dent had pulled a few strings to make this meeting happen. It was more... intimate than a conversation through the glass.
No sooner than he began to speculate about who he would soon be face to face (to face) with, he heard the door open behind him. Soft but swift footsteps crossed the floor and Commissioner Gordon revealed himself, perching on the corner of the desk.
He had a look of melancholy on his face.
"Commissioner Gordon... this is a surprise."

Gordon took a short moment to collect himself before he finally turned the handle on the door to Professor Strange's office and walked in. He saw Harvey's head turn slightly at the noise and when Gordon was sitting in front of him, his right eye betrayed his surprise. The commissioner felt some relief. This was the man he wanted to speak with.
"It's been a long time, Harvey."
Gordon stalled for time by removing his badge and gun, setting them on the desk. It made him neither physically nor situationally more comfortable to do so, but he wasn't quite ready to speak. He could feel Dent's look... his curiosity.
When he could put it off no longer, Gordon looked Dent in his good eye... Harvey's eye... and delivered the news.
"Harvey, I'm sorry to be here under these circumstances, but I thought you should know... I thought I should be the one to tell you..."
Gordon paused. His gaze fell away a moment, but quickly returned.
"...Gilda was killed. She was found earlier this evening in a convenient store. We're still investigating but I promise you I have my best detectives on this. We're going to find whoever did this and bring them to justice. I'm so sorry, Harvey."

Harley's fingers gently slid down the side of her cell's wall. She watched as Harvey was taken out from his cell and dragged away by Commissioner Gordon.
"What didja do NOW, Harvey??" she called as he was being hauled away, genuinely curious.
She of course, got no answer. She pouted weakly as her eyes watched him disappear down the hall. The cold metal door shutting harshly behind them.
"Doesn't wanna talk, eh?" she mummered to herself as she pressed her ear against the farthest point of her wall. She figured that just maybe she could listen in and figure out what they were saying.
"SHUUTUP Jarvis!!!!!!!!!!!!!" she squealed, hearing chatter a few cells down. She knew it was him. It was always Tetch mumbling to himself. He even did it in his sleep, which annoyed her at times.
Once silence broke, she went back to listening and pondering.
Was Gordon there to question Harvey about a case that him tied to it?
Naw. That couldn't be it. Everything he did was ages in the past.
Phone call from home?
Naw.. that didn't seem too likely either.
She sighed, falling back to her bed. She couldn't hear anything but the air conditioner roaring to life.
She figured she'd have to wait to figure things out.
Harley's hands reached up and tugged at her hair that were in pigtails. "WHY is it always SOOO boring around here!? We need some LIFE in here or SOMETHING--!"
Her eyes filled with a unique brightness as she sat up straight. "We need t' have a PARTY!"
But first.... she needed to get out of her cell..
Maybe she could snag one of the guard's keys when they brought Harvey back? Maybe....
Maybe...

Raymond Rowe was a man who most people would generally describe as attractive. He was tall, with a strong build, and bright blue eyes that more than a handful of his one night stands would have told you had looked right through to their souls. He seemed to have a power over women, if only long enough to have them make his breakfast. A misogynist to the core, Ray would never let a woman get the better of him.
Last night, after a stressful day in the Arkham Asylum Maximum Security Wing, he went to a local hole-in-the-wall bar to have a few brews with his fellow guards and brag about who could easily take down the Batman in a fight, describe in graphic detail about what they would like to do to Catwoman, and trade war stories. In the middle of his tale about the time he had to subdue Black Mask during a breakout (a story his friends had heard a million times but it always made the ladies swoon) Ray noticed a redhead looking at him from across the bar. When his friend wondered why he'd gone silent he jerked his head in her direction in explanation, gave them a wink along with his trademark cocky smirk, and strode over to her certain he would have another story to share with his buddies when he was finished.
He had no idea how right he was.
Only moments later Officer Rowe was walking out of the bar with the gorgeous redhead on his arm. All of his fellow guards were too busy gawking at the girl (Ray got another one!) to notice that their friend's eyes had turned green.
Now, nearly 24 hours later, he was walking Harvey Dent back to his cell after a meeting with Commissioner Gordon when he felt something come over him... some power or influence he couldn't deny. He turned to the guard beside him, beating him over the head with his night stick, knocking him unconscious. He made a beeline for the cell of Harley Quinn (a blonde he wouldn't have minded taking a run at under usual circumstances) and opened the door. He handed he his key ring, taser, pepper spray, and stood aside.

Harvey Dent sat in silence at the news of his former wife's murder. To the outside observer, his reaction no doubt seemed cold... detached. On the inside, his mind was racing. While Harvey tried to process the news and grieved for Gilda, Two-Face was not as calm.
"We have to get out of here, Harvey. We have to handle this," Two-Face insisted to Dent.
"No. We can't. Jim was good enough to come down here and let us know about Gilda. Even after all this time, after all we've done... He still respects us. I'm not going to betray that by making a break for it. What good would it do?"
"What good would it do?! Right now Gordon is here chatting with us rather than looking for our wife's killer! The GCPD are fools. The Batman is gone. The only justice is the kind we can dispense. The son of a bitch needs to pay for what he has done!"
"No! The police can handle this! We can't go down that road again..."
"Gilda would be so disappointed in you, Harvey... I'm the only one who seems to know what needs to be done."
When Gordon received no reaction from Harvey he told the guards to take him back to his cell. As he walked down the corridor, the battle still raging in his own mind, he was startled by the sudden attack of one guard by another. Before he knew it, Dent was left unattended. He was shackled but still...
"The guard on the floor has keys, Harvey... get them."

Pacing back and forth Harley's blue eyes concentrated on her hands as she writhed them together. If she was serious about planning this escape she knew she would have to make everything work well to her advantage.
No screw ups! If she did... sweet polluted freedom!! If not..s he'd probably end up in solitary for... well.... a long time.
She shuddered at the thought of going back into that hole. Being plugged up and torn away from any kind of contact was... well... maddening. She'd much rather be out here in her cell.
What she could do was get him close enough to startle the guy.... maybe make him jump back so she could grab the guy. She took note that some guards weren't as careful as others. She'd have to hope for one of the guards that really wasn't as careful.
Standing a little too close to the cell? Could mean his downfall and Harley's gain.
THIS was exactly what she was going for. Most of this would actually be luck... more than anything... but it WAS a chance. And it was a chance she needed to take. She stopped her bottom lip quivering.
"I miss Red." she sniffed to herself. She missed having someone to talk to. She missed the fun, the hugs... pretty much everything.
Soon as I bust outta here we'll go find 'er! She chimed to herself, trying to make her more focused for the task at hand.
Harley stopped a moment, her ears perked as her eyes averted down the hall. The same room where she saw Dent and Gordon disappear down to. It honestly sounded like a lot of rustling... and.. slamming... coming from just beyond the door. She could hear it clear as day.
Was something going on? She bit her lip in anticipation.
What is this--!? Her mind was racing as she watched events unfold to her immediate right. She could just barely makeout one of the guards falling to the floor with a -thump!-.
That's when the other guard.... opened her cell and handed her.... everything.
Harley's eyes went wide. Was this REALLY happening? How is this even possible? This guard just.. OPENED her cell and handed her all kinds of goodies. This was too good to be true!
Harley's face beamed as she accepted the tokens. "Aw gee! Thanks-- Um..." She looked at the guy's nametag. "RAY! WOWIE--! Aren' ya somethin'?! Helpin' me like th--"
She couldn't help but to notice his eyes. They were so... brilliantly jade green.
She thought for a moment....
Doesn't Red's plant slaves have eyes like that?
She grinned wider.
"RED MISSES ME TOO!!!! Ahhh.. I owe my gal pal somethin' HUGE after this one!" She jumped with glee, and skipped out of the cell.
Time to make her escape! She readied herself with the pepperspray and unlocked the first door. The door to freedom!
"LATER CHUMPS!" She called, waving back to everyone still stuck in their cells.

Commissioner Gordon held Harvey Dent's gaze, waiting for his words to register. Only a few moments had passed but it seemed like hours. The silence was deafening. When one of the guards, Rowe, cleared his throat it was almost startling. Harvey never even blinked.
Gordon could only bow his head in defeat. He had come here hoping to elicit some response... some reaction... some human emotion from his old friend. It seemed there was nothing left of him at all inside Two-Face's warped mind.
The commissioner gave a nod to the guards. They flanked Dent and helped him to his feet before escorting him from the room.
Retrieving his things from the desktop, Gordon holstered his weapon and held his badge a moment, running his thumb over the shield before slipping it back inside his coat pocket. He rose from the desk, pushing his glasses back up onto the bridge of his nose.
He gave a heavy sigh.
Frowning, he began to cross the room toward the door. His hand was wrapped around the knob when he heard a commotion from the cell block. Inmates were shouting... cheering.
It was another breakout.
Gordon drew his weapon, switched off the safety, held his breath, and threw open the door.

Just as Harley was saying goodbye to her inmate friends, she gave one last wave before she started to head off down the long corridor which led to main platform that would get her the hell out of the joint. But just as she closed the door she saw another figure at the opposite end of the cellblock.
Was that.... Commissioner Gordon?
"EEP!!!" she squeaked and ducked quickly, rocketing down the hall. The last thing she needed was to be dragged kicking and screaming back to a block. especially after Ivy had gone through all this trouble to stage such a cleverly crafted attempt to bust her free.
And WHAT a cleaver attempt it was! She would have to make sure to shell out her praise once she met up with her later... where.. ever that would be.
She bit her lip as she skidded to a hault. Only seemed to be one receptionist on duty. This.. was going to be cake.
With her stomach laying flat she caterpillar crawled across the sleek tiled floor. She cautiously watched the woman at the desk so as not to be seen, waited a moment until the lady's back was turned and quickly grabbed a jacket that was hanging up on the coat rack slipped out of the lobby.
Letting out a sigh of relief she pulled the jacket on and quickly checked the pockets. Something rectangular and plasticity was in the left pocket.
Pulling it out, she looked down.
"OOoh! Score!" she whispered gleefully. It was an admittance badge.
"Talk about luck!" She giggled and skipped her way to the next set of doors, used the badge and headed out to the visitor's area.
As an orderly passed he squinted, trying to take a better look as Quinn scurried past. Something.. about that girl looks-- That was when he realized. "QUINN--!!!" She hissed running after her. "SECURITY--!!"
Harley stepped forward and quickly gave him a taste of the taser in her hand. Sending thousands of volts into the bulky man's body. He slumped over without another word, his leg twitching. "Sorry Danny-Boy. Can't have ya tattlin' on me!" she said with a grin, blowin' off the 'smoke' from the taser.
Stepping over him, she skipped and ran for the exit.
Freedom was ahead she was home free!

The struggle inside his own mind was too much to bear. All he wanted was silence... peace... a decision.
Instinctively, Dent was kneeling next to the fallen guard. He wasn't retrieving the keys, but rather a newly minted quarter from the man's pocket.
As the coin flipped through the air in a tight spiral, the light glistening off its surface, Dent held his breath. When the quarter landed in his right hand, he closed is fist around it and then slapped in on the back of the left. He only hesitated a moment before looking at the result.
...tails.
A dark gleam shown from his left eye.
Two-Face grabbed the guard's keys and freed himself from his shackles, both literal and metaphorical. He grabbed the guard's taser, slipped the coin in his pocket, and stood up in time to see Harley Quinn slipping out of her cell and Jim Gordon at the opposite end of the corridor, weapon drawn and pointed right at him.
Again, the coin spun though the air...
