Slamming the back door shut of her SUV, Barbara Gordon slid the last bag of groceries into place. As she jingled her keys, she hit the button to unlock the door before and prepared the ramp of her vehicle. It wasn't long before she found herself behind the steering wheel. She gasped before she got in. "I left my wallet inside--!" A moment of panic and dread washed over her. She quietly banged her head on the steering wheel as her hands brushed over her body. "Where is it--" Did she really leave it inside of the store?
One more pocket....
"Oh--!" She breathed a sigh of relief. "Found it." she spoke out loud to herself as she pulled out her wallet from her jacket pocket.
Going through the hassle of getting out of the car after it taking a good amount of time to get herself situated would be enough to make anyone breathe a sigh in frustration.
Barbara Gordon's life these days had been reduced to nothing but troubleshooting calls and trying to remember to take enough breaks to go get groceries every now and then. She realized she had her wallet in her hand and decided to do a full-round check. She pulled out all of her cards and counted each one to make sure everything was in place. "Check." she had a habit of speaking to herself even when the com-lines weren't active. And tonight... they weren't. In fact, they hadn't been in a long time.
Life changes and superheroes move from their home cities. Some travel overseas and you don't hear from them and all of a sudden ten years passes by...
Time passes by so quickly...
Before she knew it her fingers resting on the computer chip of her VISA card. She froze on that thought and tapped the card against the palm of her hand, shaking her head in thought. "That was the strangest thing-- it felt like I left the card in the store." but yet... here it was.
She shook her head clear again and brushed it off as a trick of the mind. "Whatever." She shrugged it off and grabbed her seat belt and headed from the parkinglot.
The drive home was easy, quiet. The silence was soon broken when Barbara reached over to turn on the vehicle's radio. That was nice thing about the SUV. The sound system on it was killer. She often would have to remind Dinah to go easy on the speakers when they decided to take it out on their evening excursions.
She casually flipped through the various playlists she had set up. 'Pour some Sugar on me' blasted through the speakers momentarily before WKGC Public Talk radio show started coming through the speakers. Vesper Fairchild's voice came through her surround sound speakers as she made a left hand turn.
{{"....that brings the total of missing Gothamites to 3 this week alone that have just VANISHED from their home. They were seen in good health days and hours before they were found to be missing." Vesper's voice dipped and spoke again. "Are you saying you WATCHED your WIFE lift up from her bed, hover there, and you blinked and she was gone?" Another voice could be clearly heard on the other end. Masculine.
"Yes."
Vesper continued. "And there was residue left behind? that was green in color?"
"Yes. It was the strangest thing. Seemed... otherworldly, actually."}}
Barbara raised an eyebrow as she made her way down the street. Three vanishings with green residue left over? Now... THAT was strange. "Huh..." She wondered who was on this already, but didn't care.
She bit her lip and pressed a button on her earring that activated a bluetooth speaker she had implanted on a choker she was wearing. Mobile technology. Gotta love it. She opened a com link to any hero within a 50 mile radius. "Oracle here. I'm bored and could use a teammate to check out something weird. It involves some material gathering for analysis. Anyone up for a mission? I can take multiples. Three foot soldiers. Less is fine, it just means more work. Let me know if you're interested." She smirked.
All of it was code speak anymore. Anyone who spoke with her knew this though. They were used to the computer synthoid voice calls that came through every now and then.
She glanced out of her window as she passed the Ice Berg Lounge. She made a note to stop by. She enjoyed going in there from time to time. The music they had in there always had a tendency to get your body moving in one way or another. "I'll even offer payment in the form of drinks on the night of your choosing. For an added night of fun." The offer was up on her secured line. Any of her trusted contacts would end up receiving the message.
